Professionalism
When we asked health care support workers for their top tips on how to do a great job, many mentioned the importance of having the right attitude. From smiling to being clear about your responsibilities, a professional approach makes all the difference.
Star tip:
Never think of yourself as just an HCA or AP. We are gaining more clinical skills with training, and have become vital members of ÌÀÍ·ÌõÎÛÁÏ teams.Professionalism
Participate
From the admin assistant making the appointment, to the HCA taking the blood test, to the doctor giving the blood test results, each and every one of us has an important role to play. We are each a cog in the wheel, running the machine smoothly.
Smile
Start the morning by greeting everyone with a GREAT smile. We all know that some days can be panic days, but if you start your morning with a big smile, all the others will follow suit.
Know
Know your environment, your responsibilities, and what is expected of you within your working limitations.
Expect
Always expect the unexpected – don't just rely on word of mouth and paperwork. Patients are all unique.
Recognise
Acknowledge and recognise the different clinical team members but remember you are of equal value.
Be proud
Be proud, be diligent and be professional: prove that HCAs are special people and not everyone can do this job.
Respect
Everything you say needs to meet three criteria: honest, kind, and necessary. If it meets these three then you can say it (test me!).
Be professional
Be confident and professional at all times: these two things gives patients confidence in their care.
Lead
Remember – everything you do will have your signature and character stamped on it. Be a role model.
