Organ donation - critical care perspective

Cathy Miller 23 Apr 2024

The system of organ donation changed in England (on 20 May 2020) to an opt out system. It is important for critical care colleagues to understand about the law change and what it means to your practice. Also, to know what support and resources are there to help you, when caring for potential donors and their families.

The new law, which saw England change to an opt-out system alongside Wales and Jersey, means that people in England are now considered as willing to donate, unless they have opted out, are in one of the excluded groups or have told their family they don't want to donate.

The law change is an opportunity to save and improve even more lives.

Organ donation pathway: the critical care perspective

This uses available best practice guidance to reinforce the important considerations when caring for potential organ donors and their families and signposts to helpful resources.

In particular is information relating to the and considerations for identification and referral of potential organ donors. Information is also provided on the importance of planning and communication when breaking bad news, and seamlessly transitioning into the donation conversation - aligned to the families' readiness.

Project Lead, Legislation Change Programme (Education and Governance), NHS Blood and Transplant

Cathy and the Legislation Change Team are responsible for NHS Blood and Transplant's education and training programme, for implementation of the deemed consent legislation in England. The training was designed, built, tested and delivered to empower Specialist Nurses in Organ and Tissue Donation when having sensitive end of life and donation discussions with potential donor families, in what is often the most emotive and tragic of circumstances. These conversations are nuanced since the law has changed, so it's important that everyone is working within the realms of the legislation and that consent for organ and/or tissue donation is lawful.
