Pain and Palliative Care Forum - Get involved at RCN Congress 2023

Karin Cannons 22 Nov 2022

Apply to be a voting member on behalf of the Pain and Palliative Care forum at the RCN Congress 2023 in Brighton.  This offers an opportunity to represent the views of forum members and bring clinical insight to the debates and voting. It also enables nurses to become more involved in regional and national matters and to raise their profile professionally.

Have you ever thought of applying to be a voting member at congress?

I became aware of the role of a voting member when attending congress to present an educational event. I realised there was a way of getting more involved with the business of congress in a way that enabled me to represent the views of the Pain and Palliative Care Forum in resolutions (on which there is a vote) and matters for discussion (on which there is no vote but always inclusive and comprehensive discussion). Before and after Congress you are then able to discuss the Congress agenda with others in the forum.

I last voted at Congress in Liverpool in 2019. Resolutions voted on included: do not attempt resuscitation orders, clinical supervision, bullying, child poverty, rural healthcare, personal care and loneliness. Matters for discussion included: nitrous oxide abuse, homelessness, sepsis, uniforms, resilience, ethical employment, NHS pay and safety culture. The energy in the main hall was high and all matters and resolutions vigorously and comprehensively debated. It was educational, insightful and fun.

As a large forum we have 6 voting places at Congress 2023 from 14-18 May in Brighton. This means we need to find at least 6 people to come. Hopefully we can find more than that which then enables us to share out the voting sessions over the 5 days of congress. The voting sessions start on the Sunday evening, and continue with 2 sessions a day (am and pm) on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

To qualify to apply you need to be a member of the Pain and Palliative Care forum and have nominated it as your first choice of forum. The RCN provide travel and accommodation support to enable voting members to attend the sessions in which they are voting. There is no fee to attend congress for any RCN member.

As well as the opportunity to vote, congress provides a great environment in which to network with colleagues from both the professional arm of the RCN and the trade union side.  There is always a packed educational agenda and a fascinating exhibition of trade stands. What are you waiting for? Apply now to be a voting member and join us at Congress in Brighton in May 2023!

Read information about voting members and please complete the online application form here.  The closing date for applications is Wednesday, 7 December 2022.

We look forward to receiving your applications!
